This week, we highlight the case of Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, a former President of Mauritania and a high-ranking official who was sentenced for abuse of position, money laundering, corruption, and illicit enrichment.

Aziz used his power to accumulate a large amount of wealth through unethical means. From 2008 to 2019, Aziz was the leader of a crucial country located between North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. He also accumulated a large amount of wealth through unethical means during his presidency. In August 2020 regarding his presidency, specifically regarding Mauritania’s oil revenues, the sale of state assets, the closure of a public company responsible for food supplies, and the activities of a Chinese fishing company. Aziz was accused of amassing an and claimed that the current President of Mauritania gave him two suitcases filled with several million euros the day after his election in 2019.
